First Impressions

Alexander House is an attractive red-brick Sussex countryside manor that was once home to English romantic poet Shelley. Set in 120 acres of gardens, the hotel does ‘country escape’ with aplomb - towering chimneys, mullioned windows and an impressive carved stone portico scream Jacobean grandeur. Floor-to-ceiling glass; fresh, zingy interiors, and exciting Modern British cuisine put Alexander House back in the 21st century.

The Grecian-inspired Utopia spa occupies its own wing of the hotel making it equally accessible for day spa guests as overnighters.

What's on offer?

Hotel guests will find the entrance to Utopia Spa at the end of an elegant arched windowed corridor just off the main reception. The large, light spa reception is vast, with neutral tiles, and attractive fuchsia, blue and purple chairs providing a pop of colour. We happily browsed the array of Temple Spa and Oskia Products on display at the nearby boutique.

After being welcomed and given a quick tour, we were led down a spiral staircase to the spacious and grey-hued changing rooms. Here you’ll find some seating, plenty of soft towels and ample lockers lining the curved wall to your right. There are five generous showers on the far left, each containing L'Occitane shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Keep walking and you’ll come across a steam room, sauna and monsoon shower, a treat in a changing area especially if you’d rather not steam in mixed company. After showering, use the central vanity island to ready yourself for the day ahead.

The thermal facilities at Utopia Spa are top-notch - we particularly loved the wonderfully hot hydrotherapy pool, with its six sections of bubbly jets and domed ceiling of stars; two swan-neck fountains provided some much-needed shoulder pummelling. Swim comfortable laps in the 15-metre swimming pool, with its imposing Grecian columns, black mosaic tiles and glinting lights, before relaxing in the small hot tub. Rattan loungers facilitate post-swim chill-out time – and you can telephone the spa butler for some pool-side hydration.

Don’t leave without visiting the sheltered Spa Garden surrounded by trees and shrubs, with its raised Jacuzzi, and quirky hobbit-like barrel sauna. We wallowed in the warmth long enough to enjoy the endorphin-pumping outdoor cold shower.

You’ll find plenty of loungers dotted around the garden; you can prebook the secluded private area containing two Canadian hot tubs set on wooden decking. Relax on your own patio set afterwards.

At treatment time, head upstairs to the pre-treatment room - with its curved leather beds and striking green/black bamboo wallpaper - and watch birds fly between the treetops over the spa garden. The grand post-treatment relaxation room is much quieter with 12 loungers around the edge. The room is divided by a curtain of long thin ribbons hanging from the ceiling that flutter hypnotically as you lie back and relax under a soft throw. Or curl up with a good book in one of two hanging egg chairs.

A gym, fitness studio and dedicated spa restaurant, Reflections, complete the long list of facilities at Utopia Spa.

Tell us about your treatment

We tried a Temple Spa All about the Glow Facial (55 minutes, £140) which showcases Vitamin C as a magic ingredient to boost dull skin and even out skin tone.

Molly, my therapist, took me to a cosy room and explained the stages of the treatment. Once tucked in, lying face up, she began the facial with Temple Spa’s in the Beginning Deep Cleansing Melt, which I use at home (it has tiny crystals in it which help exfoliate the skin, but the balm itself is very nourishing). Molly warned me that the Glowing Skin Oxygen Peel that came next would fizz as it removes a thin layer of dead skin cells.

Molly then used a pair of Sonic Wave Cleansing Brushes to ensure my skin was squeaky clean before applying a mask. While that soaked in, she performed a lovely hand and arm massage. Mask removed, Holly used a Sculptor Multi-Purpose Massager - which looks rather like a pair of scissors with metal balls instead of blades – to lift and firm the skin on my jawline, cheekbones and forehead. Molly then used lifting massage techniques to depuff and iron out fine lines, paying particular attention to the lines around my eyes.

The result was impressive: my skin had been looking very uneven and dry despite (or maybe because of) a sunny holiday; a quick glance in the mirror revealed much brighter and firmer skin which was more even in tone. My spa partner had the same treatment with Isabelle; as someone who rarely moisturises (and has dry skin as a result), he emerged from the treatment room glowing. Top marks from both of us.

Alexander House & Utopia Spa offer a range of treatments from Oskia and Temple Spa as well as therapies for pregnant women, those living with/beyond cancer and treatments designed for couples.

Food Facts

You can eat in your robe in the two-rosette Reflections Restaurant, accessed via the hotel or straight from the spa. The restaurant horseshoes around its own courtyard; diners can enjoy views of the open firepit surrounded by olive trees when the weather is good. Leather stud-lined chairs and dark wood tables create a bistro vibe, while design quirks (think wallpaper adorned with cutlery) add some flare.

A two-course lunch of salads, soups, paninis, catch of the day or afternoon tea with fizz is included in the day spa package. We chose a warming celeriac and thyme soup to begin with followed by a delicious pea and broad bean risotto from the vegan menu (which was surprisingly tasty). Our spa partner went full protein with a beef carpaccio with parmesan shavings followed by a steak sandwich. Glasses of fizz seem to be very popular but don’t miss the locally made drinks; our homemade raspberry lemonade was wonderfully fruity.

In the evening, the restaurant takes on a different vibe with a good choice of fish and vegetarian dishes alongside chicken dishes and steaks from the grill. We both began our meal with a lovely rich mushroom and truffle soup; our spa partner then went on to choose the pork tenderloin in a slightly tart cowberry sauce, which matched the richness of the pork very well. We couldn’t resist the sound of the catch of the day which was monkfish in a lemon butter sauce. Our dessert was a miniature fruit salad with pomegranate jelly and a banana sorbet.

We loved / we didn't love

We loved

The arrival (and service): follow the sound of trickling water to the spa. Spa therapists greet you as you open the door and then look after your every need until you depart, from extra towels to poolside drinks.

The hot tub and sauna in the garden: even if it is raining or cold, head out from the poolside and snuggle down in the warm bubbly water. Finish off in the shepherds' hut sauna.

The ample spaces to relax: both the bright pre-treatment relaxation area with views over the garden and the dimly-lit post treatment relaxation room are large with plenty of recliners, each with their own blanket to snuggle under. Take your book and chill out.

We didn’t love

The male attendant working in the changing rooms: granted, there was a sign alerting spa goers to this but this Spa Spy had already undressed before taking stock - or noticing said man. If you are at all shy, we suggest you change in one of the larger shower rooms.

Who do you think would like it?

Friends and family of all ages: we met several mother and daughter duos, and couples enjoying time away from their children.

Treatment junkies: with great products (Oskia and Temple Spa) and a range of interesting facials and massage treatments on offer, you may find it hard to choose.

Anyone needing peace and quiet: the spa is well laid out and has plenty of spaces to just sit and be. Head out into the garden for some ‘forest bathing’ among the trees.

Jet setters: just a few miles from Gatwick airport, this would be a great way to spend the day before a long-haul flight.
