The Spa at Manchester Marriott Hotel Piccadilly

A calm city spa ideal for switching off after a busy day in Manchester (Serene Spy)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Manchester Marriott Hotel Piccadilly is a large, curved, contemporary building set right in the heart of the city, just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly train station. With 338 rooms and suites, an M Club Lounge and The Great Room – home to the Loom & Ladle Bar & Bistro – it's set up for both leisure and business travellers. There’s a gated NCP car park just behind the hotel with discounted parking for overnight guests – enter your car registration into the iPad at check-in – and for spa day visitors pay-on-arrival via a parking app.

The Spa is connected to the hotel but also has its own discreet street-level entrance. Once inside, head down a corridor to the lift and press ‘M’ to reach the spa.

WHAT’S ON OFFER?

We checked in at the spa reception desk and were invited to take a seat to complete consultation forms. Once finished, we were given a short tour of the facilities before being left to change into robes (bring your own flip flops).

The changing rooms are compact but newly refurbished in neutral hues, with 14 key-pad-operated lockers; two showers stocked with Elemis shampoo, conditioner and shower gel; two loos; and a vanity area with two hairdryers. So far, so standard.

The thermal suite is intimate, with jade-green tiles lining the walls and low lighting creating a moody atmosphere. We started in the rock sauna, which comfortably seats four across wooden benches on two levels and, on our visit, was the perfect temperature - easily our favourite space. Opposite, the aroma steam room has space for five seated on a dark marble plinth, and offers a gentle heat. Cool-down at the ice fountain in the cold room or get horizontal on one of the two warm tepidarium loungers between thermal experiences.

Beyond the thermal suite, the spa features a fitness suite for those wanting a workout. Back upstairs near the spa reception, seven treatment rooms branch off from the seating area where afternoon tea and refreshments are served. From here, a doorway leads through to a large relaxation lounge dressed in calming beige and brown tones, with 11 chairs, each with a footstool, side table and reading lamp – help yourself to blankets and magazines.

TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENTS

We tried the Wildflower Botanical Journey (60 minutes, £75).

My therapist, Charlotte, collected me from the relaxation lounge and led me to the treatment room. Inside, she invited me to take a seat while she talked me through the experience, reviewed my consultation form and presented me with three balms to choose from. I was immediately drawn to Heal, with its distinct sweet orange and fennel aroma.

Lying face down on the bed, the treatment began with warm oil drizzled over my body in a flowing, almost choreographed sequence before a slow, firm and rhythmic massage.

Charlotte moved her hands seamlessly across my legs, arms and back, before asking me to turn over so that she could focus on my feet and the front of my legs. Charlotte then treated me to a deeply relaxing scalp massage, incorporating my face, neck and décolleté. The treatment ended with a thoughtful finishing touch: a scented ribbon tied around my finger.

Charlotte’s perfect pressure left me feeling grounded and restored. Afterwards, I was taken back to the relaxation room, handed a glass of water and a small pot of scrub to take home.

FOOD FACTS

We dined casually in the spa itself, en robe, in the seating area near spa reception - ideal for keeping the day’s flow without having to change. The space felt relaxed and informal, with two cream Chesterfield sofas arranged around a low wooden coffee table, a water and tea station tucked into the corner, and a wooden cabinet displaying spa retail products.

Afternoon tea was served on one of two tables positioned by the floor-to-ceiling windows, presented on a classic three-tier chrome stand. The bottom tier held a selection of finger sandwiches, including tuna, egg, ham and cheese, alongside a scattering of vegetable crisps. The middle tier featured fruit scones, clotted cream and jam, while the top tier was dedicated to indulgent sweet treats: red velvet cake, Victoria sponge, a rich chocolate tart and a playful lemon and white chocolate dessert styled as a dippy egg and soldier.

A pot of English breakfast tea and a glass of fizz accompanied the spread.

WE LOVED

  • The Wildflower treatment: the flowing sequence and comforting products left us feeling deeply relaxed.
  • The location: right in the city centre, the spa is ideal for a post-work massage or facial, or to unwind after a day shopping in this buzzing city.
