Located on the outskirts of the city, the Cambridge Country Club recently opened its doors to a brand-new wellness centre. Expect luxurious treatments, tranquil relaxation rooms and ultra-elegant mani-pedi lounges.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Located in on the outskirts of Cambridge, in the pretty village of Bourn, the already-established Cambridge Club knocked down its old golf building four years’ ago and created a new wellness space made entirely out of wood and glass.
The Club has an 18-hole golf course, an indoor stimulator for practice, plenty of spaces to eat and drink - including Spikes Bar and the Cotto Lounge overlooking the green - a Garden Suite for private parties, luxury holiday lodges to buy, plenty of parking and a spa.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
Park up right outside the building and walk through the sliding glass doors to the main reception. The entire space is light and bright with huge amounts of marble, long corridors, modern artwork and – on our visit – several Christmas trees.
On this floor, you’ll find the pool, the thermal facilities, the changing rooms and a tan box; head up the impressive marble staircase (checking out the ceiling lights on the way) for the physiotherapy room, a vintage barber shop, an all-singing-all-dancing gym, a studio for classes, a Spa Lounge for lunch and The Spa itself.
Spa reception is light and bright with white gleaming floors and walls, a desk with ‘The Spa’ emblazoned across the front, as well as hundreds of Elemis products to tempt to the right. We were warmly greeted by Georgia who – after tweaking our itinerary to accommodate the winter sniffles - invited us to take a seat around the corner, offered us glasses of water and handed us iPads on which to complete health questionnaires. We then selected dishes for our three-course lunch from printed menus.
Georgia then handed us stone-hued robes and towels, as well as a pair of slipper-style flip-flops, and took us on a tour of the spa, leaving us in the changing rooms downstairs. One last item to receive: a tiny slip of paper with a code on it to open doors within the spa (take a photo if you are likely to lose it).
Changing rooms are basic but functional with huge lockers (both tall and wide) for all your winter boots/coats and cases, two showers and one loo behind pale wooden doors, one private changing room and cream squishy blocks by which to change. In front is a vanity bar for two with hairdryers and a large mirror.
From here, head back up the stairs for the spa. Beyond the reception desk, you’ll find a manicure bar for four with pink chairs and a pedicure room around the corner with four stations, also pretty in pink. We loved the Elemis-branded carousel horse opposite and the modern artwork on the walls (which has been newly-purchased).
Next door you’ll find the Himalayan salt room with three tepidarium beds heated to a (very) toasty 35 degrees and salt bricks embedded into the wall – our favourite of the thermal rooms. Four single treatment rooms and a double can be found along the corridor from here, as well as a relaxation room with grey double day beds adorned with grey blankets, a faux fire and the second of three Christmas trees.
Spa goers can walk around the entire space in their robe, including gliding between the floors (be careful not to slip on all that marble). Downstairs, the 15-metre pool has a darkened floor and pearly dark grey walls making it moody and inviting. Want bubbles? Walk down the steps to the right where there is also a Whirlpool seating four. Want to swim? Take the steps down to the left and do your lengths (we managed 20 with ease). Relax on one of several curved loungers afterwards.
To the right of the pool is an open-plan rainforest shower area backed by dark mosaic tiles with three shower heads; opposite a steam room behind a glass door seating six – which was super steamy on our visit – and a dual-level sauna seating eight.
TREATMENT TALK
We tried a Naked Pedicure (45 minutes, £45).
The lovely Louisa, my therapist, met me in reception and led me around the corner to the pedicure room. Inviting me to take a seat, she guided my feet into a sink of warm water laced with bubbles and talked me through the pedicure (which is essentially everything you would expect except the polish).
Louisa then set to work removing the old varnish from my toes and buffing away the hard skin on my soles – no easy feat. While she did so, a cup of coffee appeared for me to sip throughout the treatment.
Louisa then applied a scrub to both feet and my legs and washed this off in the warm, bubbly water, laced with an Elemis milk bath. Louisa then pushed the cuticles back, cut and filed the nails into shape, and massaged my feet and legs with a lotion. Et voila: tootsies ready for Christmas colour at home.
Our spa partner tried the Head, Neck and Scalp massage using Elemis Frangipani oil (described as a ‘hug in a bottle’) followed by hot stones to loosen tight muscles. She drifted out of the treatment room looking very Zen.
The Cambridge Country Club offers a range of massages – think Bamboo, Swedish and Hot Stones - signature rituals, facials from Elemis and Biotec, Therajet Hydrotherapy Massages, manis/pedis, treatments for pregnant women, men’s waxing, finishing touches, close shaves and haircuts, as well as Pamper Parties for younger guests.
FOOD FACTS
At midday, we headed to The Spa Lounge in our robes to tuck into our pre-ordered three-course lunch where grey squishy sofas, and sets of tables and chairs are laid out on a plush carpet. At one end you’ll find a large bar to order hot drinks and wines /beers (beside the third of grand Christmas trees); at the other a fire place.
On the menu on our visit, starters such as classic Caesar or tomato and mozzarella salad, mains such as chicken and pesto tagliatelle or pan seared Sea Bass and desserts such as chocolate brownie or ice cream.
For starters, we tucked into a rich and creamy chicken parfait with rolls of toast; our spa partner’s smoked salmon with dill oil, capers and cream cheese looked like a piece of art on a black plate. For mains, we treated our cold to a spicy Thai red vegetable curry with garlic naan; our spa partner loved her creamy Burrata salad with cherry tomatoes and red onion dressing.
Despite being very full, we somehow managed to polish off two classic desserts: New York Cheesecake and Crème Brulle.
WE LOVED / WE DIDN’T LOVE
We loved
Being able to drive up and park right outside the building – it’s the simple things…
The staff were extremely kind and accommodating throughout our visit.
Our food was restaurant quality.
We didn’t love
The changing rooms are on a different level to the spa, meaning lots of stairs. The daily-changing door code is also a bit of a faff.
Our lunch took a while to arrive on this occasion but was worth the wait (the free glass of wine as an apology was a kind touch).
WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD LIKE IT?
Golfers: as well as the 18-hole course, there’s a golf simulator and Spike’s Bar.
Elemis fans will not only love the extensive treatment menu, which showcases the brand with pride, but the Christmassy boutique and the Elemis-branded carousel opposite the pedicure thrones.
Mother-and-daughter duos: we loved our spa day.
WHAT BUBBLE RATING DID YOU AWARD THIS SPA?
Once again, we awarded Cambridge Country Club a Good Spa Guide Bubble Rating of 5 Bubbles for its modern building, good range of facilities beyond the spa (including a retro barber shop, golf course, gym, studio and several dining options), good food, effective treatments and courteous staff.
Stylish Spy visited in December 2025 and awarded it 5 Bubbles
