FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Tucked away in glitzy Mayfair, The Four Seasons London at Park Lane is a five-star property with Hyde Park views, 16 rooms and suites (those on the upper floors newly-appointed), a Michelin-star restaurant, a cocktail bar, an afternoon tea lounge and a rooftop spa.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
The Spa is wonderfully - and rather unusually by London standards - located on the 10th floor of the hotel affording city views from reception, the changing rooms, the treatment rooms and the sauna.
Exit the lift and walk straight into spa reception with its handmade white curved desk and shelves of products, branded slippers, diffusers, swimwear and candles to buy. Once checked in, nip around the corner and take a seat on one of the cream chairs placed in front of a full-height window showcasing our capital in all its glory. We immediately spotted the London Eye on our sunny October visit.
Here, we browsed the rails of designer clothes for sale, completed iPad consultation forms, sipped lemon verbena tea and refreshed our faces with a hot towel, before being taken on a tour of the spa.
The changing rooms are beautifully laid out with wooden lockers in sets of three, each book-ended by full-height versions. Inside you’ll find a fancier-than-norm robe (silky on the outside; towelled within), green flip-flops and a white towel. Drop your valuables into the dedicated box on the door before using a four-digit code of choice to instigate the lock.
Change beside one of the small benches or nip into the private changing cubicle. Sizeable showers – of which there are two – contain Elemental Herbology shampoo, conditioner and body wash. You’ll also find two immaculate loos and a swimsuit spinner. Grey floor tiles, glass doors and large windows let light flood into the whole space.
After spa-ing, take a seat at the handmade, curved white dressing table - with its built-in sink and drawers (containing hairdryers and straighteners) - and preen whilst staring at the city skyline. Rectangular, back-lit mirrors give Hollywood feels; we loved seeing the array of well-thought-out amenities available, including cleanser, moisturiser, deodorant, hair gel and hairspray. Listen carefully: the sound of waves crashing on a shore (from a speaker in the ceiling above) will transport you far away from the Big Smoke.
Help yourself to water from a jug or flag down a member of staff and order a juice or glass of Prosecco from the beverage menu.
The spa’s wet facilities are divided into male and female, with facilities in duplicate for both guest-types. Open the frosted door marked ‘heat experience’ and head into the warm space. A sizeable vitality pool
morphs the right-hand side; walk down the steps, push the button for bubbles and lie down (almost flat) on the metal bars at the end that create a huge bed. We bubbled away until our fingers pruned, admiring the round blue light embedded into the ceiling.
The space has a gentle steam room clad in grey marble, with seating for around six at a time, and a fab sauna with three layers of wooden seating (again for six), London views through a large window and a wall of orange salt bricks for de-escalating those autumn sniffles.
Cool down at the experience shower afterwards under the largest of heads, pushing the buttons until you find the right setting. Help yourself to fruit-infused water, too. We had the entire space to ourselves on our visit – a real treat.
A rather heavy fire door from here leads into a relaxation area with its wall covered in little grey stone faces, maroon palette, cream seats and footrests. Help yourself to magazines, snacks and water. Want some privacy? Pull the heavy screen across.
Post-treatment snoozing can be afforded in one of individual relaxation pods with fully-flat beds, reading lights, headphones with buttons for music, magazines, blankets and curtains for privacy.
The spa also has fully-equipped gym (with yet more London views) which is open 24 hours a day for hotel guests.
Couples wishing to spa together can also book the Sky Suite with its Hyde Park views, private steam shower, comfy seating, individual changing room and relaxation area.
TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENTS
We tried the Omorovicza Blue Diamond Facial (115 minutes, £240).
My therapist, Jacy, met me in the relaxation room and led me to a treatment room with full-height glass allowing me to spot several London landmarks on entering.
Settling on the treatment bed, lying face up, Jacy began the treatment with several deep breaths to relax me. After fully inspecting my skin, Jacy decided on a double cleanse using a foam cleanser for round two, which she removed with hot mitts.
She then added a Blue Diamond Peel which tingled slightly – while this worked deep into my pores, she massaged my scalp. Taking this off with hot mitts, Jacy spritzed a toner onto my face in preparation for the next stage: a mask containing real gold. While this nourished, Jacy scrubbed and moisturised my arms and hands, satisfyingly pulling them over my head afterwards for a good stretch.
After some more hot mitts and another spritz, Jacy added cream essence and miracle oil to my skin to hydrate it before using Gua Sha pieces to lift and drain. A massage cream then afforded a workout for my face that left no area un-pummelled (even my eyelids got the royal treatment). Cryo balls cooled my skin down afterwards.
Two moisturisers - diamond concentrate to protect my skin’s DNA and an illuminating version - were then used to hydrate. The treatment ended with eye cream, pluming lip balm, another refreshing spritz, and a good tug of my arms and feet.
On looking in the mirror afterwards, I can honestly say that I looked five years’ younger. Jacy then left the room so that I could re-robe before taking me to a relaxation pod where a tray containing a mini granola bar, a reviving juice with tangy ginger and a peppermint tea awaited.
The Spa at The Four Seasons Park Lane partners with a number of brands to offer a range of exciting and results-driven massages, facials and signature treatments, including Cellcosmet, Omorovicza, Philosophia Botanica, Linda Meredith and Margaret Dabbs London.
FOOD FACTS
Arriving the night before our spa time, we dined at Pavyllon by renowned chef Yannick Alléno, who earned a Michelin star last year just six months after opening.
As London restaurants go, this is a huge space with an upstairs area accessed by swirling staircase and a curve of seats in front of the open kitchen on the lower floor, which we immediately asked to be seated at (this particular Spa Spy loves culinary theatre).
Starters on our visit were divided into Cold (beef tartare; wild Seabass), Hot (scallops; cheese souffle) or Vegetables (beetroot and spinach ravioli). Mains included pasta, fish and meat dishes (think roasted sweetbread or beef fillet); desserts will satisfy any sweet tooth.
We opted for the Immersive Mayfair 4-course taster menu which began with bite-sized canapes and warm bread with real butter.
To start, we shared a fresh tuna tartare dish with a perfectly cooked egg followed by a steamed cheese souffle with seared foie gras. Our main of roasted Devon duck with ridiculously creamy mash sprinkled with nutmeg was a triumph; our dessert: layers of sweet pastry filled with vanilla cream, blackberry compote and jelly, dusted with tarragon, was outstanding.
Everything was as beautifully presented as it was tasty; the kitchen staff proving their Michelin-star-worth throughout the evening. Our Sommelier began our evening with glasses of Champagne followed by a crisp white (similar to a NZ Sav Blanc but Italian) to complement our tuna and souffle dishes, and a Côtes du Rhône red to pair with our duck. No complaints here.
WE LOVED / DIDN’T LOVE
We loved
Being able to see planes flying across the sky during our treatment: fewer basement spas please London.
The food: I could happily eat that evening meal every day of the week (and twice on Sundays).
Our treatment was super effective; we loved the light-filled, view-filled treatment room, too – a real upgrade from those dark, windowless spaces of norm..
We didn’t love
Not being able to have lunch within the spa – guests will need to dress and head to the hotel bar, lounge or restaurant to dine.
WHO DO YOU THINK WOULD LIKE IT?
Individual spa goers: with its facilities divided into male and female, this spa is perfect for solo spa-ing.
Couples will love the sky suite with its views - and added privacy.
The well-heeled: like most London spas, this costs a pretty penny, but boy is it worth it.
