The focal point of the two-storey Cairndale Spa is the large thermal pool with its jets water blades and airbeds surrounded by a variety of seating. Fancy a drink? Flag down one of the friendly spa butlers and order something to sip poolside.
When it comes to treatments, Cairndale Spa offers anything from crystal therapies to holistic wellbeing in six treatments rooms. With the planet in mind, brands such as Tribe517, VOYA and Gaia hold fort, as well as products from the Cairndale x Annandale Collection, a range of whiskey-/vanilla-scented goodies created in collaboration with the local Annandale distillery. The spa also has a Rasul and only double hammam in Scotland.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Cairndale Spa is an adult-only destination spa, located within a family-owned hotel in the centre of Dumfries, just a short drive from the Scottish Border.
At the back of the hotel, you’ll find the beautifully designed two-storey spa with the hydropool at its heart, an excellent selection of thermals, a dedicated café and a juice bar.
WHAT’S ON OFFER?
Park at the back of the hotel and walk around the front to enter through the imposing door. You’ll find the spa reception through the back on your right - a calming space with a wooden slatted reception desk at the helm; three stylish glass pendant lights hang from the ceiling above and shelves are lined with Voya, Gaia, Tribe 517 and 111Skin products.
We were warmly welcomed and led through to the spa café where a mango smoothie shot and hot towel awaited us. We completed consultation forms, pre-selected our bathing experience and were handed a canvas Cairndale bag containing a towel; a generously-sized, sage green robe with gold piping; and matching slippers.
The changing rooms can be accessed via a key coded door behind reception. The noteworthy design pairs neutral wood and white with a charming and colourful artists’ palette-inspired wallpaper. Banks of half-size, code-operated lockers line the walls with cushioned benches below on which to change. There’s one private changing room, two loos and two rainforest showers containing La Eva shampoo, conditioner and face and body wash. The vanity area has two round wooden mirrors and three hairdryer-cum-straightener combos.
On this floor you’ll also find the six treatment rooms and the post-treatment relaxation room with four comfy electric beds operated by remote control. Pop on one of the new complimentary LED face masks while you relax. Help yourself to fruit, herbal tea and water.
Take the spiral staircase down to the facilities. On your immediate left: four water beds dressed in plum covers; behind here, the pool lounge with its sofas and wicker chairs with stone-hued cushions. You’ll find a gently heated herbal lounge with rosemary sprigs over the coal stack and swinging wooden bench seats and - tucked in the corner - the petit juice bar serving smoothies, soft drinks, Prosecco, Bollinger, hot beverages and 111Skin sheet face masks. This whole area is separated from the thermal facilities by a glass wall, keeping it cool and quiet.
A door leads through to the thermal area where the hydropool takes centre stage with its mermaid tiles and reflective ceiling. Pummel tired shoulders under one of three swan necks, relax on the two jet benches or jet beds, or bubble away in the Jacuzzi at the far end. Frosted glass windows line one whole wall with two woven egg chairs in the middle. Around the outside: grey curved woven loungers, drinks menus and magazines.
Make sure you carve out enough time to explore the thermal rooms which line the perimeter. The Infra-red sauna – with back rest grids – can comfortably seat four to six people; the large Herbal Steam was super-hot. The Aroma Steam - with its two curved mermaid tile benches - a gentler heat and scented, with Ylang Ylang. In the corner: an enormous Himalayan Salt Sauna complete with orange salt bricks and a star prickled ceiling; big enough for 18 people to toast in 85 degrees.
Couples can get hot and muddy in the rasul; soak in side-by-side black tubs in the Bathing Suite or get lathered up in the hammam – the only two-bed hammam in Scotland.
Cool down in the experience shower, the blue-glowing ice fountain or brave a dunk in the Brass Monkey Ice Bath - chilled at 2 degrees with ice shards floating on the top (brr).
TELL US ABOUT THE TREATMENTS
We tried a Voya bathing experience for two (60 minutes, £65 as an add-on to a spa day) and the Exclusive Lowland Surrender (75 minutes, £139).
Our spa host collected us poolside and led us to the bathing suite, where two black tubs sat side-by-side, drawn and ready with our chosen therapy: organic seaweed aroma bath salts and organic warmed spiced mud. We were invited to scatter rose petals, buds and lavender into the water before scanning a QR code for a serene sleep meditation.
For the second experience, my therapist Anita, led me to one of the six treatment rooms. She began with a soothing foot ritual using the Cairndale x Annandale Collection Reborn Smoothing Scrub - a blend of locally distilled whisky, vanilla balm and brown sugar - before leaving for me to get comfortable on the heated bed.
Anita began with flowing, rhythmic massage movements, working clockwise around my body - easing tension from my legs and arms before focusing on my neck and shoulders, where it was needed most.
Turning over, the experience transitioned into a facial using Tribe 517’s uplifting orange-scented products, first a cleanse and tone followed by a calming face and scalp massage.
The treatment concluded with a dusting of foot powder, a gentle chime and a grounding moment of reflection that left me feeling calm, centred and completely relaxed.
Anita guided me to the relaxation room, where I got comfy on a bed and sipped peppermint tea. Enhancing my treatment further, I enjoyed ten-minutes of shut-eye with an LED face mask in place.
FOOD FACTS
Spa guests can dine en robe in the light-filled spa café, where floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light. A slatted wood and gold bar with pale pink stools sits beneath statement pendant lighting; shelves lined with Bollinger add a touch of indulgence.
We enjoyed afternoon tea, beautifully presented on a three-tier stand. The bottom layer featured finger sandwiches including cucumber, egg mayo, ham and smoked salmon, alongside a sausage and Stornoway black pudding roll. The middle tier: Clava brie, beetroot & caramelized onion quiche, and fruit scones with clotted cream and preserve; the top tier: sweet treats including pistachio and olive oil cake, Cairndale Eton mess and a lemon tartlet. This was accompanied by a choice of Newby teas; we opted for rosehip and hibiscus, and ginger and lemon.
The lunch menu includes options such as superfood salads, alongside classics like the Cairndale steak burger and club sandwich, with a tempting selection of desserts, wines and fizz.
If you’re staying overnight, you can dine in the newly refurbished bar and restaurant, The Oak. Warm and inviting, the space blends comfort with timeless charm – think cosy corners, olive trees, ivy-clad trellises and characterful interiors.
We began with padrón peppers and olives, before starters of Korean spiced chicken lollipops and duck steamed bao buns. For mains, the slow-cooked beef cheeks with garlic mash and red wine jus were rich and comforting; the king prawn Pad Thai was fresh and zingy. To finish, we shared a Scottish cheese board, washed down with a bottle of crisp Pinot Grigio.
SWEET STAY?
Overnight guests can enjoy complimentary parking at the rear of the hotel. Our luggage was whisked straight to our room while we were busy spa-ing.
We stayed in the newly refurbished - and beautifully styled - Copper Suite. A four-poster bed takes centre stage – backed by floral wallpaper, while a luxurious copper freestanding bath (complete with La Eva bubble bath) sits in the bay window.
An old-fashioned bedside telephone, Nespresso coffee machine and feature fireplace set into the wall create a warm and inviting post-spa retreat.
WE LOVED...
The thoughtful touches: from spa butlers offering iced towels to 111SKIN masks at the juice bar and LED masks relaxation room, every detail has been considered.
The food: everything we tried was delicious, from the spa café to the newly refurbished bar and restaurant.
The Copper Suite: stylish and full of character, it’s well worth booking for an overnight stay.
